  15. <p>     The ethnic vendettas in Yugoslavia's splintering republics
  16. are sowing more death, this time in newly independent,
  17. Muslim-dominated Bosnia-Herzegovina. In the small town of
  18. Bijeljina, where Serbs and Muslims have lived side by side for
  19. centuries, independence has bloodied the community, as irregular
  20. militias fight to remain linked with neighboring Serbia. After
  21. a Muslim grenade exploded in a Serb-owned cafe last week,
  22. killing several customers, heavily armed Serbian commandos
  23. slaughtered civilian Muslims and took over the town, invading
  24. the local mosque and tearing down the Islamic flag. In Bosnia's
  25. current state of lawlessness, guerrillas enter at will from
  26. Serbia and annex border towns. Sniper bullets and artillery
  27. shells whistle through the streets, catching innocent bystanders
  28. in the crossfire. In the week since independence was recognized,
  29. more than 100 have died, and the Serbian-dominated Yugoslav army
  30. has refused to intervene. Because of the close intermingling of
  31. Bosnia's Muslims, Serbs and Croats, some fear the casualties
  32. could eventually dwarf the toll in Croatia, where ethnic
  33. violence has taken more than 10,000 lives since last summer.
